Many adults aren’t aware of the early warning signs of eye disease. By going into the community and making it easy to get preliminary screenings and eye health risk assessments, the Maryland Society for Sight helps adults who otherwise wouldn’t be aware of the need to protect their sight.

Each year, our staff and volunteers provide over 3,000 people with free vision screenings at health fairs, libraries, businesses, churches, senior centers and other public gathering places. About 30% of those we screen are referred to an eye care professional for further evaluation of potential eye problems. For many, this is the first indication of potential vision problems. The goal is to provide this service in the context of people’s everyday lives, so they are reminded of the importance of getting regular eye examinations. An important part of the vision screening is to counsel people as to when to get an eye examination and ways to preserve their sight. People are also given educational information on eye health and safety.

The Maryland Society for Sight provides vision screenings each year for the Maryland State legislators and their staff at the Maryland State House in conjunction with the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.

The Society has long partnered with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield to provide vision screenings and educational information to Marylanders. This year, CareFirst became the generous sponsor of the Adult Vision Screening Program.

Fifty percent of all blindness is preventable. Thanks to the generous support of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, we are working to help prevent the unnecessary loss of sight in Maryland.
